DoorDash and Shopify Bring On-Demand Delivery Into the Merchant Workflow
E-Commerce
DoorDash’s direct Shopify integration is turning local delivery from a custom logistics project into a channel that eligible brick-and-mortar retailers can manage alongside their existing commerce operations. Merchants can connect a Shopify catalog and store location to DoorDash, making local inventory discoverable to nearby shoppers while DoorDash handles delivery.
For operators, the important shift is not simply faster shipping. It is the convergence of marketplace discovery, store-level inventory and last-mile fulfillment. A retailer can use physical stores as local fulfillment nodes without building a proprietary courier network, while keeping Shopify central to product and order management.
What sellers should do
First, audit store-level inventory accuracy. A local-delivery promise is only useful when the listed item is actually available at the pickup location. Second, choose products that tolerate short picking windows and transport well; high-cancellation or fragile items can erase the convenience advantage. Third, compare contribution margin by channel after marketplace fees, picking labor, packaging and refunds rather than judging the program on gross sales alone.
Merchants should also treat the rollout as a controlled local test. Start with a limited assortment and delivery radius, measure order acceptance, cancellation, substitution and repeat purchase, then expand only where service levels remain reliable. Product pages and packaging should set clear expectations for local availability and returns.
The broader lesson for North American e-commerce is that delivery speed is becoming a merchandising decision. Retailers with stores can increasingly compete on proximity, but the winners will be those that connect accurate inventory, disciplined unit economics and consistent customer service.
