Instacart Adds Academy Sports + Outdoors to Same-Day Delivery Marketplace
E-Commerce
Instacart has added Academy Sports + Outdoors to its marketplace, giving customers access to same-day delivery—as fast as one hour—across sporting goods, outdoor equipment, apparel, footwear, and Academy’s private-label assortment. Instacart says prices will carry no markup compared with Academy stores.
The launch covers more than 300 Academy locations across 21 states. It arrives ahead of back-to-school, fall sports, hunting, and tailgating demand, making the timing as important as the assortment: urgent, occasion-driven purchases are a natural fit for rapid local fulfillment.
What It Means for Sellers and Operators
This partnership is another sign that same-day marketplaces are expanding beyond grocery and convenience. For brands selling sports, outdoor, and seasonal products, marketplace readiness now includes local inventory accuracy, store-level assortment discipline, and content that helps shoppers make quick decisions on mobile.
Operators should watch three areas. First, compare marketplace conversion and margin with owned-channel pickup and delivery after accounting for fees and promotions. Second, keep high-intent seasonal items available at the store level, because rapid delivery promises are only valuable when local stock is dependable. Third, make product titles, images, sizes, compatibility details, and substitutions easy to understand; compressed delivery windows also compress the customer’s research cycle.
The broader lesson is that speed is becoming a merchandising feature, not merely a logistics service. Retailers and brands that connect localized inventory with event-driven campaigns can capture purchases that would otherwise go to whichever nearby seller can fulfill first.
