GXO Expands Humanoid Fulfillment Plans: Capacity Comes Later
E-Commerce
GXO and Agility Robotics announced on October 26 that their humanoid-robot partnership will expand to e-commerce fulfillment sites in Statesville, North Carolina, and Lebanon, Tennessee. The companies expect deployments to begin in early 2027 with Digit 4, followed by a transition to Digit 5 when commercially available. This is a planned expansion, not newly available holiday fulfillment capacity. Source
What the announcement establishes
The companies say Digit has moved more than 100,000 totes at GXO’s Flowery Branch, Georgia, facility under their existing commercial relationship. Its described work is moving totes and placing them onto conveyors alongside other automation. That cumulative company-reported figure is evidence of a defined material-handling application; it is not a published orders-per-hour rate or a guarantee of lower fulfillment fees. Source
Agility separately says early customer access to Digit 5 is expected in the first half of 2027, with general availability targeted for the end of 2027. Those targets reinforce the distinction between an expansion agreement, an operational deployment and broad product availability. They remain forward-looking company expectations. Source
Operator analysis: buy service outcomes, not a robot roadmap
For sellers evaluating a fulfillment partner, the useful question is which workflow is improved at the facility that will actually hold their inventory. Ask for demonstrated throughput, exception rates, uptime and a manual fallback process for the proposed task. Do not translate tote movements into customer orders without a documented relationship between the two.
Keep current peak-season commitments separate from future automation assumptions. A service agreement should identify the live site, accepted order cutoffs, escalation ownership and measurable service levels. Treat any prospective automation benefit as conditional until the provider demonstrates it in that operation.
For warehouse teams considering a pilot, start with a repeatable transfer task and establish a baseline before adding robots. Include integration, supervision, maintenance and recovery from exceptions in the cost comparison. Our assessment: the expansion is a meaningful signal of repeat-customer interest, but this announcement alone does not establish a seller-level cost saving or delivery-speed improvement.
