Amazon to Shut Down Mechanical Turk on September 30

Amazon

Amazon will permanently close AWS Mechanical Turk on September 30, 2026, ending the crowdsourcing marketplace it launched in 2005. The platform connects requesters with workers who complete Human Intelligence Tasks such as data labeling, transcription, surveys, and content review. Amazon says current workers and requesters should use its closure FAQ to prepare for the service ending.

The final shutdown follows an earlier step: Amazon stopped accepting new Mechanical Turk customers in July. CNBC reports that the service had faced declining activity and increased competition from newer data-labeling platforms, while AI tools have also changed the economics and quality-control requirements of task-based work.

For sellers and e-commerce operators, the immediate lesson is operational rather than technical. Any workflow that relies on MTurk for listing audits, catalog cleanup, survey responses, image classification, transcription, or human validation now needs a replacement plan. Teams should inventory active projects, export task instructions and results, settle outstanding worker obligations, and identify which processes genuinely require human judgment.

Replacement vendors should be evaluated on worker screening, data handling, audit trails, turnaround time, and quality assurance—not only task price. Operators should also avoid moving sensitive customer or marketplace data into a new tool without reviewing access controls and contractual protections. A smaller, trained reviewer pool may be more reliable than an anonymous crowd for brand-sensitive work.

The broader signal is that human review remains useful, but the delivery model is changing. Sellers can combine automation with sampled human checks, escalation rules, and clear acceptance criteria. The goal should be a documented quality system that can move between providers, rather than a process tied to one labor marketplace.
